BIOGRAPHY
As an assistant Professor in ORT and deputy director of Areas of Excellence Centre for Musculoskeletal Degeneration and Regeneration, Dr. Xu mainly focuses on the development of innovative biomaterials for improving tendon, bone, and cartilage regeneration. With clinical training background in Orthopaedics and in-depth understanding on musculoskeletal disorders, Dr. Xu has published over 100 peer-reviewed SCI articles (total impact factor > 600, accumulative citations > 5000, H-index 38) in regenerative medicine. His representative works include original publications in Nature Medicine (2016), Advanced Materials (2024, 2025), Materials Today (2023, 2022), Advanced Functional Materials (2023), Biomaterials (2021, 2022, 2024, 2025), Journal of Clinical Investigation (2024), Nature Communications (2021), and ACS Central Science (2019).
Above efforts have earned Dr. Xu numerous academic awards, including Webster Jee young investigator, Savio L.Y. Woo young researcher, research excellence award (Faculty of Medicine, 2022), postgraduate research output award from CUHK, and Tigris education fund. As principal investigator, Dr. Xu has been supported by the General Research Fund (GRF), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, Young Scholar Scheme), Health & Medical Research Fund, Direct Grant from CUHK, and other regional grants. In addition, Professor Xu has founded two start-ups (Targene Biotech and Mag Med Biotech), aiming to push forward clinical applications of the self-developed products, with supports from Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong.
Dr. Xu is life-time member of ICMRS and founding member of Sports Medicine Physician Union in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He also actively supports peer-review and serves as reviewers for many international journals.
