NSFC-RGC granted to Professor Gang Li to investigate the role and mechanisms of Kindlin-2 in distraction osteogenesis

Congratulations to Professor Gang Li, Dr. Sien Lin and their lab for successfully granting support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)/Research Grants Council (RGC) Joint Research Scheme 2022/2023. The proposed study is to investigate the role and mechanisms of focal adhesion protein Kindlin-2 in distraction osteogenesis (DO).

Professor Gang Li is one of the leading scientists in the world in studying and developing the distraction osteogenesis technique for management of bone disorders. The mainland collaborator, Professor Guozhi Xiao at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUST), Shenzhen has made a series of important discoveries in the field of bone development and homeostasis such as the key focal adhesive molecule Kindlin-2 and related molecules.

The collaboration between CUHK and SUST will dissect the molecular links of Kindlin-2 in mechanical tension mediated bone regeneration in DO, and targeting Kindlin-2 which may lead to enhanced bone formation in DO.

Completion of the 2022 Research Postgraduate Training and Animal Handling Workshop

In October and November 2022, our department has organized a series of in-house training courses for the newly enrolled research postgraduate students. The lectures covered planning of postgraduate studies, fundamentals on clinical and applied orthopaedic research, and common techniques used in preclinical research. The ORT Research Committee also organized hands-on workshops on histology and biomechanical testing. Students were able to learn the basic operation of the machines, including the newly installed ElectroPuls® E3000 linear-torsion dynamic test system (Instron).

With the generous support from Laboratory Animal Services Centre (LASEC) and Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee (AEEC), we organized an Animal Handling Workshop in the Orthopaedic Learning Centre. Apart from joining lectures on animal welfare and ethics, under the guidance of the LASEC vets and staff, students learnt how to handle the laboratory animals. Our big thanks to the LASEC and AEEC team!
