Despite popularity of horseracing in Hong Kong, there is limited scientific research worldwide in sport science and sport health for the Jockeys. The Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine and Sports Science collaborates with the Hong Kong Jockey Club on enhancement of Apprentice Jockey’s training. On 21& 22 May 2022, we did biomechanical and physical tests for apprentice jockeys in CUHK Medical Center to evaluate their cardio-pulmonary function, physical finess, movement and muscle coordination during simulated horseracing.We believe that with scientific research, we will be able to identify much more about the individuals and be able to train more specificly the muscles that need to be trained.

Our annual undergraduate curriculum retreat updates our teachers, including honorary staff, on what we have done in the past year and the department’s future plans.

This year, we were happy to have our young graduates (Naomi FUNG, Casey CHAN, Travis NG, Leo WONG) share their personal experiences, telling us how this new generation learns and studies.

In addition, we were honoured to have Prof Shekhar KUMTA share an enlightening talk about his vast experience in medical teaching over the past few decades.

The Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory has recently installed a unit of small animal radiography system for pre-clinical research. The Kubtec Parameter together with installed DIGIMUS® BMD package incorporates DEXA / DXA and SEXA / SXA for non-invasive studies of bone mineral density and fat content. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (WHO) is the gold standard recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. It is also a recommended method by international guidelines for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. DXA for small animal is therefore the most clinically relevant assessment for bone mineral density and body composition. This new equipment will continue to support our leading-edge research in the musculoskeletal system.
